There’s not many change initiatives that are bigger than introducing a city-wide rail link to help Aucklanders move around their city more efficiently and with ease. Imagine the challenge of changing the way people travel around a city. That’s exactly the change that Sean Sweeney as the CEO of CRL – City Rail Link, is grappling with. Hear about how he’s helping modernise the way Aucklanders get around.
Join us in this interview with Dr Sweeney where so that we can seek to understand the complexities of leading a major change initiative such as introducing a connected rail link around the city. We’ll take time to understand the complexities of managing such a large initiative, multiple construction partners, engaging the public and their frustrations with transport disruption, and his vision for the future.
Dr Sean Sweeney began working as CEO of CRL three years ago in July 2018 having spent time in USA, Europe, and Australia delivering major infrastructure for Melbourne. Dr Sweeney is an engineer with a PHD in construction Economics from the University of Melbourne. He’s worked on one of New Zealand's iconic sites, Te Papa in Wellington, and brings his global expertise to this important, but complex infrastructure initiative.
About our speaker
Dr Sean Sweeney began work as the Chief Executive Officer of City Rail Link Ltd on 2 July 2018. He is an engineer with a PhD in construction economics from the University of Melbourne. After graduating in engineering from the University of Auckland, Dr Sweeney spent seven years working on the development of Te Papa in Wellington before heading overseas to work in the USA and Europe and then settling in Australia. In Australia, he delivered a program of major public infrastructure in Victoria and ran a top-tier Australian construction firm. More recently he established and implemented a $2.5bn prison construction program for New South Wales. On his appointment, City Rail Link Ltd board chair Sir Brian Roche said Dr Sweeney brought a wealth of relevant and current experience to the position, as well as a strong academic background. He said both of these put the CRL project in a great position as it heads towards the delivery of major contracts
